Description
The University of Southern California (USC), founded in 1880, is located in the heart of downtown L.A. and is the largest private employer in the City of Los Angeles. USC's Information Technology Services is seeking a Systems Programmer IV to join its team.

This position requires that the programmer have the skills and experience in installation and support of a large cluster based system running Linux(CentOS/RedHat) and knowledge of Solaris versions of Unix that are needed to support the facility. This will include administration of Linux operating system, security monitoring, system configuration, computing platform little-endian versus big-endian issues, authorization and authentication utilizing directory databases, data types and data size definitions, and data storage and management will be necessary to provide proper assistance to faculty and staff. Knowledge of the installation and support of cluster management support tools, particularly Moab and/or TORQUE and Maui, as well as the OS deployment tools xcat or ROCKS is preferred.

The programmer should have the ability to work with faculty involved in research to assist them in the implementation of complex systems and applications as they relate to grid software, MPI software design and tuning, and complex system debugging tools. The ability to use software engineering tools such as scripting languages, CVS configuration management tools and integrated development environments desirable.

The programmer needs to be able to solve highly technical or obscure problems occurring in the operations system, and have the ability to work independently, receiving minimal directions. Good verbal and written communication skills are required to coordinate between faculty and computer scientists.

Skills
Formulates or defines specifications for complex operating software program applications.

Designs, codes, tests, debugs and documents programs. Troubleshoots highly complex or obscure problems.

Serves as project leader or technical specialist. Schedules work, sets priorities, establishes deadlines, and ensures the timely completion of all work by systems programmers, as assigned.

Installs, tests and evaluates new third party software. Formulates/defines specifications for complex operating software or modifies complex existing applications.

Provides consultation, advice and assistance in modifying or maintaining complex operating systems.

Writes applications that typically deal with overall operating systems. Provides leadership, guidance and direction to other systems programmers, as needed. Reviews the work of others, as requested.

Stays informed of new developments and technologies by reading journals and other pertinent publications, maintaining contact with vendors, and participating in professional organizations, meetings and seminars.

Minimum Qualifications:
        
Minimum Education: Bachelor's degree
Combined experience/education as substitute for minimum education

Minimum Experience: 5 years

Minimum Field of Expertise: Expert understanding and strong technical knowledge of and experience with systems administration, backups, operating systems programming languages and associated hardware platforms. Possesses the required knowledge to build, configure, load and restore a system from the ground up. Previous systems administration experience required.

Preferred Education: Bachelor's degree

Preferred Experience: 7 years
